Spirituality & Prayer

Prayer and spiritual growth is essential to transform ourselves and the world. Below are resources from partner organisations and ministries around the world to strengthen and inspire you in the work of justice and peace. Prayer resources on specific justice themes (refugees and asylum seekers, caring for creation, etc.) can be found in the Justice Network's Issues and Advocacy section.

1118RemembranceCandles 150

You may have noticed that things have changed. The weather is different now. It has changed and the trees are all green. Spring is now actually here. As soon as Halloween passed the Christmas decorations and festive foods were put on the shelves at the shops. The Cup has been run and we are now reminded in the media that there are only ‘six weeks until Christmas!’.

November is the month where we are prompted to pause and reflect on what has passed as the end of the year is so near. In our Church we pause in November to reflect also. During this month we remember all who have passed from their earthly life into their eternal life where they have been reunited with the Father.

Christians unite to pray for creation

0918 SeasonforCreation 150This month, many Australian religious congregations are joining Christians around the world to pray and care for creation as part of the global “Season of Creation” movement.

The theme for this year's Season of Creation is “walking together”.

0818HeartsBurningWithinUs 150The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart have published a new scripture and prayer resource for use in parishes and small groups.

Entitled Hearts burning within us, the book was prepared by Fr Peter Malone MSC, and is designed to serve as a simple, accessible and structured program of formation for anyone seeking to encounter Jesus Christ in the Scriptures.

0718EricaBernard‘Because of Her, we can’ is this year’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday theme. So, I find myself reflecting on what that means to me, as an Aboriginal Catholic woman, writes Erica Bernard of Broome.

While sitting at the grotto of Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral in Broome with my Mimi Cissy, (my grandfather’s sister) I asked her what should I write, she sat there for a moment and said well it should all start with her, pointing to Our Lady.

0618SeasonoftheSpirit 150June marks a number of important faith and justice events on the calendar and Jesuit Communications has put together a new resource, titled ‘Season of the Spirit’, to provide weekly prayers throughout this season.

For schools, ‘Season of the Spirit’ invites staff and students to consider how the coming of the Holy Spirit encourages us and invites us to consider our relationships with God, each other and creation.

0517PlenaryCouncil 150The Plenary Council 2020 will be officially launched across Australia on Pentecost Sunday, May 20.

To prepare for that, the Plenary Council website has a range of prayer resources for parishes, religious communities, families, schools, and Catholic workplaces to help them prayerfully celebrate the beginning of this important event in the life of the Church in Australia.

0418LostSheep 150Priests and bishops have been instructed that they need to smell like the sheep, writes Sister Antonia of Jamberoo Abbey.

But what if this advice is not just for priests and bishops but for all of us? What would that mean?

0318FrFrankMoloneySDB 150World-renowned biblical scholar Fr Francis J. Moloney SDB AM will be headlining a brand-new prayer podcast, Audio Divina, which was launched on Ash Wednesday.

Produced by the Salesians of Don Bosco media centre in Australia, new episodes will be released each Wednesday of the week, featuring a LectioDivina styled reflection on the coming Sunday’s gospel, as provided by Fr Moloney.

0218ProjectCompassion 150How do we respond to the call from Ash Wednesday’s scripture for a “steadfast spirit” of compassion and kindness for all God’s people and so be ambassadors for Christ?

Each year Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion, which runs through the six weeks of Lent, brings together communities across Australia, in solidarity with the world’s poor, to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. This year the focus is on youth and their communities globally and providing them with a Just Future.

1712Joyreflection 150When asked to do an article on the theme of Joy, I had ear marked this weekend to cross it off my ‘To Do’ list, writes Sr Julianne Murphy RSJ. Little did I know my week would bring the death of an uncle on Monday and a call to a suicide on Friday. So, Joy… what about it?

Despite the sadness today, moments of joy are ever present with me too. I recall earlier this year, a photo I took of Zynomie, who is shown is this photo, when he wrote his name for the first time. I also treasure this image of communal joy when the first rains broke here after a long Dry Season. And, the joy Andrew and I had when the Crows made the grand final!
